Young Arthurs Honored
By Chris Gosek
Five Durant Road Middle students have been recognized among the top young writer’s across the nation for their submissions in the annual “Young Writers of America” poetry contest.
Creating their pieces as a part of their “Paint Chip” poem assignment in Ms. Speaks’ language arts class at Durant, the five seventh graders, Gabby Armstrong, Sutton Cavalchire, Amelia Faust, Alina Greene, and Abby Ngugi were thrilled with their inclusion into the "prestigious annual student anthology.” The kids began their work on the pieces by selecting a square paint color sample and then incorporating that color in some way into their poems. Less than 20 percent of the entries from across the United States submitted are chosen to be used in the yearly publication and due to being selected, each of the five students are now finalists in the contest.
