Researching and Producing
By Chris Gosek
After learning two-digit addition without regrouping and continuing to work on these skills until they had mastered them, Ms. Hines’ second graders at Corinth Holders Elementary were rewarded by being split into groups for a research project that culminated in the teams making a product based on their findings.
The class divided into four different interest groups for their projects and the topics selected were the Eiffel Tower, bugs, volcanoes, and the broken castle of Heidelberg, Germany. Each team gathered information on their topic and had to decide amongst themselves on a way of presenting it once finished. The Eiffel Tower and broken castle groups each built a replica of the structure they studied to go with their findings. The bug group made models of their insects in addition to a pop up picture board, while the volcano researchers divided into even smaller teams and built volcanoes that actually erupted out of homemade play-doh. Three different types of eruptions were tried, with one using hydrogen peroxide and yeast, another combining baking soda and vinegar, and the most popular mixing Diet Coke and Mentos candy.
