Second Grade learns about to life cycle in Science

Life of a Butterfly

By Chris Gosek

Learning all about life cycles in science, Ms. Pufky’s second graders have gotten an up close and personal look at the process, waiting for the emergence of butterflies from the caterpillars that they originally started with in the class.

Starting with the tiny caterpillars, the kids have closely observed each step in the butterfly’s life cycle. Keeping them in a net in their classroom, the youngsters were readying to see the eggs formed and anxiously await seeing them turn into a butterfly that they can release. Each student in the class has kept a daily journal on their observations, documenting the changes they have seen and the reasoning behind them. To culminate the unit, each child will make a poster, drawing what they had observed throughout the life cycle process.
