Lead Mine Elementary
Reflections is an annual art program sponsored by the national, state, and local PTA’s. Each year, a different theme is chosen. The 2011-2012 theme is “Diversity Means…”
At Lead Mine Elementary, the children began thinking and talking about diversity back in the fall. Then, they got started on their projects. The students created amazing paintings and drawings, wrote thoughtful and imaginative stories, performed interpretive dances, created videos, and took beautiful photographs. After pouring in lots of energy, the children submitted their entries for judging in November and later displayed their work in the school media center.
Then one afternoon in January, the Lead Mine PTA hosted a warm reception for all of the participants and their parents. Cake, punch, and gummy bears were shared as the students from kindergarten through fifth grade took turns being recognized for their imaginative approaches to explaining the meaning of diversity. Several students were also recognized for outstanding entries, and one was recognized for placing third in the dance category and second in the literature category out of all of the students in her age division across the Wake County Public School System.
