Green Elementary "Lily Pad Live"
Lily Pad Live
By Chris Gosek
Taking to the airwaves each morning to inform the staff and their fellow classmates at Green Elementary, the crew of the “Lily Pad Live” broadcast has worked seamlessly with the help of Ms. Mitchell to deliver the news.
With a group of fifth grade students taking on each role for the daily live newscast, the kids not only read the news from the anchor spot, but also work the camera and type in the PowerPoint that serves as a teleprompter for the on air broadcasters. Each morning the show goes live to the classrooms across the school and informs all about the daily weather, lunch menu, who is on “safety patrol” for the week, and recent holiday information. The kids also select a “super staff” member each week, where they recognize a Green Elementary employee for a job well done. Being that they are now learning about “Black History Month,” the Lily Pad team has been discussing a different influential figure in accordance with this each week. The fifth graders are also joined by younger classes on the broadcast to help them recite the pledge of allegiance and the school’s very own “LEAP pledge” every morning. Read More ...

Nature Haiku
By Chris Gosek
Continuing with their language arts unit on poetry, Ms. Ard’s class at Green Elementary have recently wrapped up work on “nature haikus,” making their very own frame’s to display their finished work.
The children began this assignment by taking a trip outside to observe the nature surrounding them at the school. Once they selected a topic for the poems, they wrote them out and presented their writing before the class. The final step in the project saw the students collecting different items such as sticks, moss, leaves, and even small pinecones to decorate frames that they could “publish” their work in before bringing it home to show to their parents. Shadow Watching
By Chris Gosek
Ms. Schmidt’s class at Green Elementary took part in a hands on activity this past Monday as they continued with their science unit on the solar system and the sun, heading outdoors to “watch their shadows.”
The students were paired up with a classmate for the exercise that saw them tracing the outline of their partner’s shadow with chalk. After they finished the outline, they labeled the time in which the work was done and then headed back into the classroom. The students repeated this process at several points throughout the day, standing in the exact same spot each time. This exercise allowed the kids to see how the placement of their shadow changed throughout the day and thus monitor and witness how the sun moves during the day. Read More ...
